Who:

• NORMAL In Schools (NIS) is a 501(c)3 arts-and-education organization which
brings NORMAL (a hip, rock ‘n roll musical), an accompanying curriculum, clinical
psychologist and person-in-recovery to schools to educate about eating disorders,
self esteem, healthy coping skills and family communication. For every $1,000
raised, NORMAL in Schools can bring its live program into another school.

Why:

• According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than half of all
teenage girls and nearly one-third of teenage boys in the United States use
unhealthy weight control behaviors that are characteristic of eating disorders—
serious and complex mental illnesses that are more widespread than ever before
with between 25 to 28 million boys, men, girls and women in the United
States struggling with them now.
• According to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, eating disorders have begun to
affect children as young as 5 years old and, according to the National Institute
of Mental Health, they are also on the rise in diverse ethnic and socio-cultural
groups, despite widely-held and erroneous beliefs that only Caucasian teens
are seriously affected.
——————————————————————————————————————-
• Headquartered in Milwaukee and founded in 2007, NORMAL In Schools
(NIS) has successfully raised awareness of eating disorders in communities and
reduced the stigma attached to mental illnesses. A recent study conducted by
an Iowa State University Ph.D. psychology candidate conclusively proved the
positive effects of the NIS curriculum on audience members.
• Proceeds from INSIDE OUT! will benefit the NORMAL In Schools nonprofit
organization and its mission. In particular, NIS is launching a DVD version of its
program and online curriculum so that students nationwide have access to the
program. For every $1000 earned, NIS can bring its live program into another
Wisconsin area school.
• NIS has been featured at the Wisconsin Psychological Association conference,
Employee Assistance Professional’s Association, National Eating Disorder
Association, International Fringe Festival (Edinburgh, Scotland), the EDTA
International Thespian Festival and Wisconsin State PTA Conference.
• NIS founder, Robyn Hussa, will receive the Champion in Women’s Health
Award by Sue Ann Thompson’s Wisconsin Women’s Foundation in May, 2010.

NORMAL In Schools (NIS) is a nonprofit arts and education organization that implements programs and curricula centered around performing the rock musical NIS in order to raise awareness of eating disorders and promote healing through theatre.

NORMAL, the true story of a family’s struggle with an eating disorder, is an award-winning musical supplemented by a talkback discussion with a medical expert specializing in the treatment of eating disorders and a person currently in recovery. Through these performances, talkbacks, and other supplemental curricular materials, NIS seeks to teach its audience about good health, body image, wellness, family systems and family dysfunction, the devastating impact of eating disorders, and the therapeutic influence of theatre.
