NORMAL
October 2005
New York, NY

Normal was a world premiere musical with book by Yvonne Adrian, lyrics by Cheryl Stern, music by Tom Kochan and developed with Jack Cummings III.

Scott Rink served as choreogrpaher and Associate Director and John DiPinto served as Musical Director.

An original musical, Normal takes a close look at a “perfect and happy” American family and what happens when an unexpected crisis suddenly shakes them to the bone as a mother sets out on a terrifying and yet ironically humorous mission to save her daughter whose life is threatened by an eating disorder. Normal examines the roller coaster ride of life—full of love, humor, struggle, and discovery—and wonders if someone can ever be fully responsible for saving another person’s life.

The cast of Normal included Tony Award nominee Barbara Walsh, Adam Heller, Erin Leigh Peck, Nicholas Belton, Nancy Johnston, Drama Desk Award winner Toni DiBuono, and Shannon Polly.

The orchestrations by Tom Kochan used piano, flute, sax, clarinet, cello, bass, guitar, and percussion.

Normal was a groundbreaking musical bravely dealing with the taboo subject of anorexia nervosa. A series of engaging post-show talkbacks featuring top health and psychiatric professionals as well as survivors were organized by Transport Group’s Executive Director Robyn Hussa and were a highlight during the run.

NORMAL in Schools (NIS) will kick off its first annual 5K family walk/fundraiser, Self Esteem Stomp, at 10 a.m. Sunday, October 24, on the campus of Alverno College, 3400 S. 43rd St., Milwaukee.

The Self Esteem Stomp is the first annual family event of its kind designed to help the entire family learn about self esteem while having fun. The event will begin with a casual, family-oriented 5K walk followed by interactive outdoor activities including live music, drum circles, yoga and art.

Local school groups, sororities, community clubs and individuals and student organizations from middle, high school and colleges are encouraged to register for this all-day event.

Because lack of communication is too often “normal” in families, NIS’s programs encourage individuals to be ‘abnormal’ — to share their true feelings, allow for mistakes and imperfections, discontinue seeking external validation, and embrace self-love, self-gratitude, and self-worth.

Part of our mission is to promote healthy self esteem in individuals of all ages – but particularly young people. This first annual Self Esteem Stomp is a perfect way to make this topic fun for the entire family.

Proceeds from “Self Esteem Stomp” will be used to help NORMAL in Schools create a cutting-edge, online DVD film version of its award-winning educational program to enable access to a worldwide audience reaching beyond students and educators to include patients in recovery, families, clinicians and athletic teams.
